Welcome to a creative workshop! You will learn the basics of sashiko where the repair becomes a beautiful detail on your garments. Course content The workshop begins with a brief introduction to Japanese repair traditions where Jennie inspires with pictures and samples of repairs. She shows the basics of sashiko and guides you through your own repair projects. Sashiko & boro Sashiko is a Japanese word for the embroidery technique used to decorate and reinforce one or more layers of fabric. Stitches are sewn in different patterns. According to tradition, white cotton thread is used on blue hemp fabric. The white thread on the indigo-dyed fabric gives sashiko its distinctive look, but feel free to try embroidering on garments in other colors with colorful yarn! Boro is a way to patch together old textiles. A Japanese philosophy that is about saving instead of wasting. Previous knowledge The workshop is suitable for both beginners and sewing experts. Everyone works on their own garments. You do not need to have any previous experience of sewing or making clothes. Before the course You bring the garment (s) you want to work with during the workshop. Jeans or cotton fabric without stretch is suitable to start with. Feel free to bring an embroidery needle, thimble, scissors and materials if you have. There will be a number of sets to borrow on site and also some yarn and textiles that you can use for your repairs.
